The Huckleberry Hound Show

Here's the cast of The Huckleberry Hound Show in September 1961.  By this point, Hokey Wolf and his sidekick Ding-A-Ling had taken over the slot vacated by Yogi and Boo-Boo, who have moved over to The Yogi Bear Show, premiering that fall.

Hokey Wolf, Ding-A-Ling, Huckleberry Hound, Pixie, Dixie and Mr. Jinks

  1. The Yogi Bear Show didn't premiere that fall. His show didn't air until January 1961. The L.A. Times announced Hokey's debut on March 14, 1961 (Yogi's "Bear Faced Bear" was on the Huck show the previous week).

Other than the highlights in the eyes, they sure look like they're from Bick's model sheets. Very attractive. Colours are nice, too.

  2. Now you're talkin'. My favorite cartoon character of all time, Huckleberry Hound, and his friends. Here's a little gift now for Tom (sung to the tune of Clementine): Mr. Ruegger, Mr. Ruegger, Mr. Ruegger thanks for makin' me blue. Merchandising colored me red but only blue for Mr. What's-His-Name!

  3. Yowp -- I knew the Yogi show premiered in 1961. Have posted on the subject elsewhere. Apologies for the late night brain snafu.

The character models come from a 1975 press release model sheet, no doubt promoting a syndicated package. I made a few adjustments: for one, Ding-A-Ling's hat was painted entirely black in this press release. I changed it to its traditional red color. And, of course, added the background.

  4. Thanks to Pokey (Steve C) as well as Yowp for reminding me of the correct dates for the arrival of Hokey Wolf and The Yogi Bear Show...both in 1961.

    1. Late brains do that sort of thing. I generally write last into the night and then sock a post away. If I pull it out a few weeks later I can always find stuff I've missed or needs fixing (or better wording).
It looks like Hokey joined Huck when the 3rd season cartoons were rerun. The first Hokey I can find aired with "Spud Dud," one of the more fun Huck cartoons.
